Indicator overview

How the Fear & Greed Index is calculated

index = Crypto Fear & Greed reading (0–100), last observation of each UTC day

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index blends volatility, momentum, volume, social activity and Bitcoin dominance into a single 0–100 sentiment score. Coinfuty polls it hourly and keeps one reading per day permanently, so the chart builds a history against price that the source itself only shows for a limited window.

What it signals

Extreme greed (above 75, and especially the 90 level used here) has coincided with local and cycle tops; extreme fear below 25 has marked capitulation lows. The index is a contrarian tool: it is most useful at extremes and says little in the 40–60 band.

Limitations

  • Coinfuty's stored history starts in July 2026; earlier readings are not backfilled.
  • A composite with undisclosed weights — treat it as a sentiment gauge, not a measurement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Crypto Fear and Greed Index today?

78 (Greed) as of Sep 4, 2026.

What does extreme greed mean for Bitcoin?

Sentiment is euphoric — volatility, momentum, volume and social chatter are all stretched. Readings above 90 have coincided with local and cycle tops; the index is a contrarian gauge that is most useful at its extremes.

How is the index calculated?

It is a composite of volatility, market momentum and volume, social-media activity and Bitcoin dominance, scaled 0–100. Coinfuty records the last reading of each UTC day and keeps the history permanently.

Why does the history start in July 2026?

That is when Coinfuty began storing daily readings; earlier values are not backfilled, so the chart lengthens by one point per day.

Coinfuty computes every series on this page from daily BTC close prices and public constants — the Bitcoin halving schedule, block subsidy and published regression coefficients. Values refresh nightly (00:20 UTC) and the current day is patched hourly. These are historical, backward-looking indicators; nothing here is investment advice.
